Writing for MatterDaily.org
MatterDaily.org is a news, views, and information website (with occasional print supplements) administered by the staff and volunteers of Wolverine Farm Publishing, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Fort Collins, CO. Our intent with MatterDaily.org is to put forth good writing about things that matter to our community, and to foster a culture of belief—belief in the power of writing to change the world, belief in the necessity of well-informed and engaged citizens, and belief that we must utilize creativity and imagination to get us out of all our 21st century mishaps (social, environmental, artistic, etc.). That being said, we do not want to be simple cheerleaders of our community (read: preaching to the choir), or naïve “progressives” or “idealists” who ignore the realities of the actual world.
Of course you must first be familiar with the website to understand what we are looking for, and even better, you would be familiar with our literary journal, Matter, and our short-lived Great Ecstatic Reporter, for those are the publications that led to MatterDaily.org. If you’ve read all of it, great!

Estimated Word Count: Typical “features” are usually in the range of 1,000 – 2,500 words. Book/music reviews generally are between 250-500 words. In-depth investigative reporting can exceed 5,000 words. The best advice we have is to use as few words as possible to tell the story as well as you can tell it.

Stories should be based locally, or must have some local/regional relevance.
Stories must fit within one of the departments on the website, or if you are writing something for “THE BIZARRE” department, it must possess qualities that make it bizarre, and not be just a kitchen sink type story.
Follow-up information including relevant organizations, ways to get involved, ways to further the discussion, etc.
Absolutely no slander
Protect the integrity of Wolverine Farm Publishing & MatterDaily.org at all times throughout the reporting, writing, and publishing process
Facts must be checked, sources reported, and honesty upheld
Unnecessary
Stories developed to promote a business or product.
One-sided rants and raves.
Simplistic journal-entry type pieces.
Boredom
Pay
Music, film, book reviews: $15 per review (dependent on prior approval by us).
Local Spotlights/Literary Journalism/Investigative Reporting: $50 per article of 750 words or more (payment is dependent upon prior approval by us).
